Material Exploration-Other Surfaces
Understanding mediums and creating your own..
A list of medium examples and combinations to create a variety of visual outputs.
1) Experiment - Painting on aluminum foil
Materials used- clear gesso, aluminum foil, black gesso + matte polymer medium, ecoline ink, glue + water, nepheline gel, gold oil paint + egg/oil/vinegar/water emulsion, watercolor paint + egg tempera, low viscosity polymer, linseed oil
•Nepheline gel-coarse texture, absorbs the ink really well.
•Same separation effect from the linseed oil on aluminum foil
•Cracks in the surface from the egg tempera paint applied for staining on top of the glue and water layer.
Materials used- Aluminum foil on illustration board, linseed oil, nepheline gel, glue+water, black gesso + matte polymer medium, egg/matte varnish/water emulsion+ watercolor paint, ecoline ink, glazing medium gloss+watercolor paint, modelling gel gloss, ultra matte medium
2) Experiment - Painting on Plexi Glass
Materials used- Plexi Glass base with 1 coating of white gesso+ dry media ground, red acrylic ink, regular yellow ink and glazing medium gloss
• Image taken right after all materials were used on the plexi glass sheet.
• The dry media ground had a fine sandy texture
• The acrylic ink bled into the glazing medium while the yellow ink sunk to the bottom, being absorbed by the gesso and dry media ground
Experiment after drying:
• Surface cracks
• Has the appearance of a bloody egg
Materials used- Plexi glass, acrylic paint+ glue, fiber medium + water, acrylic ink
• Originally I tried to stick the sheet of plexi glass to an illustration board with clear gesso but it peeled off
• Surface prep- acrylic+glue applied to half of the sheet and watered down fibre medium to the other. I wanted the glue and acrylic to somewhat peel, but It didn’t so maybe using some oil under would help
3) Experiment - Painting on Illustration Boards
Materials used- Black mounting board, gel medium +soft body acrylic applied with a palette knife, black gesso rubbed onto the surface with gloves and some areas removed with a damp paper towel
•Black gesso mattifies the areas where it is applied
•Glove application helps get into the ridges created by the palette knife
Materials used-Black mounting board, gel medium +soft body acrylic applied with a palette knife, green acrylic and matte self leveling gel rubbed onto the surface with gloves and some areas removed with a damp paper towel
• The acrylic and matte self leveling gel have a similar mattifying effect as the black gesso
• Glove application helps get into the ridges created by the palette knife
Materials used- black illustration board, clear gesso + acrylic inks, green watercolor paint+ egg/matte varnish/water emulsion, glue + water, glue + green paint emulsion + matte varnish, watercolor paint + egg tempera, matte polymer medium, dish soap
Materials used- Part 1: Medium weight white illustration board, 1 part white gesso + 4 tea bags, Black ink and water
• Ink and water absorb into the board
• Tea leaves add texture and after drying, add a slight pale yellow-green tint to the gesso
Materials used- white illustration board, white gesso+ water, gold oil paint + egg/vinegar/oil/water emulsion, watercolor paint+ egg tempera
• This was more of a test panel to see the quality and application of the paints mixed with different egg binders
• The egg tempera mix had a more fluid consistency-good for staining surfaces
• The gold oil paint and egg/vinegar/oil/water emulsion took some time to combine and kept separating but after constant mixing a thicker paint was formed.
• Palette knife used to apply the gold oil paint emulsion and the burnt orange egg tempera mix and then a brush dipped in water used to stain the surface
4) Experiment - Painting on Watercolor paper and latex
Materials used- watercolor paper, green watercolor paint+ egg/matte varnish/water emulsion, watercolor paint+ egg tempera, clear gesso, dish soap, retarder medium, glue + water, acrylic paint
• Worked into wet surface
• the First layer- on wet paper, clear gesso and the combination of paints was applied and the dish soap, retarder medium, and glue+water mix were applied
• Paper moved around to allow the paint to mix
• Soap bubbles formed a cluster and dried like that
Materials used-: Cardboard surface, clear gesso, latex glove, acrylic spray paint
• The latex glove was cut and glued to the piece of cardboard using clear gesso and spray painted from a distance
• This was more of a fail, the idea came to me a while back when I was spray painting with gloves on and the spray paint left an interesting texture on the latex, I was trying to recreate that but the effect was underwhelming
• I do think the latex itself is an interesting material to explore further
Materials used- Black gesso on upper half+ ecoline ink+salt on watercolor paper
• Black gesso was painted on the top half of the sheet and the ink on the bottom half
• While it was still wet, salt was sprinkled on top and then scrubbed away after drying
