Two Steps Forward, One Step Back
Acrylic and Watercolor on Tea Stained paper
27.5” x 19.5”
"Two Steps Forward, One Step Back" playfully encapsulates the feeling of being stuck in a specific place and time. Conceptualized and completed during the second wave of COVID-19, this vintage-inspired board game, stained and painted with black tea, acrylic, and watercolor, provides a personalized twist on Snakes and Ladders. It serves as a commentary on the state of the world and the personal impacts felt during quarantine—conveying the uncertainty in life, work, friendships, and relationships. Despite one's efforts, the persistent sense of ending up back at square one creates an eternal loop in time.
2) Memory Blocks
Memory Blocks
Photographs and found Objects encased in Resin
This installation delves into the concept of Disembodiment and Fragmentation, emphasizing the mental realm over the physical. It comments on detachment from past and present versions of oneself, memories, and experiences. Revisiting my demolished childhood home triggered a sense of being a voyager in my own life, creating invisible walls between memory and reality.
To convey this intricate thought process, I crafted resin blocks containing found objects and photos from my past. The resin acts as a barrier, providing visibility without complete access, and explores the notion of resin evolving into a memory of a memory. Bubbles symbolize gaps in recollection, highlighting how, over time, we remember the memory of a memory rather than the original event—an intriguing concept. The tactile and interactive design of the blocks grants physical access to viewers, while the resin simultaneously reinforces a barrier, compelling them to assume the role of voyagers peering into someone else's life.
